Who is the master classic car painter?

Insights into a rare craft

I kept thinking to myself:

"One day I'll write a book about everything I've experienced as a painter."

Perhaps this blog is the beginning of that.

Who am I and why am I starting this blog?

Hello everyone,

I am Jörg Egger, 55 years old and have been a car painter and classic car restorer for over 35 years.

I completed my training at the end of the 1980s. Back then, I was still working without machines. I sanded exclusively by hand, often until my fingers bled. We painted without a polishing machine, so the result had to be perfect straight from the spray gun.

This time had a huge impact on me. It wasn't always easy, but it showed me how important patience, precision and technical discipline are in my job.

I came into contact with classic cars during my early years in the industry. It wasn't about quick repairs, but about understanding and reproducing original paint jobs and restoring them true to the original.

In the 1990s and 2000s, I gained a lot more experience, including outside the classic car world. During this time, my two sons were born and issues such as job security and career were at the forefront of my mind.

But one thing has never changed. Every time I saw a classic in front of me, I knew: this is what I really want to do.

In 2008 I founded my own company and since 2018 I have been restoring under the name Oldtimermeisterlackierer.

Master classic car painter Jörg Egger works on a black BMW 3.0 CSL with a perfect piano lacquer surface, the Egger's Surface System. Workshop equipment and professional restoration environment in the background.

My work revolves around high-quality paintwork, especially on classic and exclusive vehicles.

Perfect surfaces and original paint finishes are my passion and my specialty.

Why am I writing?

In this world, which is constantly getting louder, I personally often lack a calm and "real" approach.

Everything screams for attention, everything is out for effect.

But what's really missing is authenticity - and that's exactly what I want to counteract here.

I believe that honest insights say more than any advertising text. Because I've seen a lot in my job, looked after a lot of vehicles, made a lot of decisions. Both good and bad.

I would like to tell these stories here and show my everyday life to anyone who is interested.

What is this about?

It's not about passing on knowledge or sharing tips. It's about showing what this work is all about - technically, personally and emotionally.

  • Projects and their history (what was done to a vehicle and why)

  • Technical topics (e.g. paint structures, materials, surface quality)

  • Experiences from everyday life (decisions, mistakes, processes)

  • And about the work itself

Jörg Egger, master classic car painter, prepares a vehicle for painting. He applies masking tape by hand with precision to ensure clean contours for the subsequent paint job. Workshop with logo in the background.

Clean and precise preparatory work is the foundation of every perfect restoration!

Who is this for?

For my customers.

For collectors and workshops.

For people who are interested in classic vehicles.

And for anyone who would like to get an insight into my day-to-day work as a painter and restorer.

What's next?

I will provide regular insights. I am planning 1-2 posts per month.

For example:

  • What is the Egger's Surface System?

  • Why I didn't want to become a painter at first

  • The story of the BMW 3.0 CSL by Bob Lutz - How it came to me and what was done to it.

  • The difference between a good classic car paint job and one worthy of a museum.

I look forward to you reading and commenting.
